Reviews for The Year of the Bird

5 ***** A powerful graphic journal. The words and pictures are snapshots of life-bright flashes of moments remembered. Beautifully written and illustrated, this edition is a masterpiece of feeling, color, and word that will transport the reader into a better place. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13022722-the-year-of-the-bird midwestbookreview.com The Year of the Bird: True Stories in Pictures & Words is a "graphic journal" in that its day-by-day reminiscences are punctuated by striking color artwork on virtually every other page. Author Susan Spangler chronicles moments of joy, tragedy, heartbreak, and remembering what is most precious. The Year of the Bird is ultimately a testimony of hope, and the moments in life that deserve to be cherished. Highly recommended. http://www.midwestbookreview.com/sbw/jun_12.htm (on "The Memoir Shelf") |

This book runs the gamut of emotions: it inspires, it is funny. There are harrowing moments. And at times there are moments of hope. This book serves up the surprises life can hand us. The stories include illness, death, and grief. Midnight trips to the emergency room (done that many times myself -- I learned to grab a few books to read while waiting). Many of the stories occue in 2001. The fact that airplanes crash into towers on a bright blue morning would thus not surprise us. The poignant fact is that it is also the author's grandson's seventh birthday. How's that for a "happy birthday"? The book celebrates the highs and lows, joys and griefs, warmth and fights of a family. Sometimes the family struggles to retain sanity in the face of illness and tragedy. Sometimes history and events conspire to make the simple things remain simple--or complicate them. The book is colorfully illustrated. The stories are short and can stand alone so that reading it in one sitting, or in order, is not necessary. And the book will give other families struggling hope in their struggles. The tree with hand-leaves is a vivid reminder of how we all reach out to help each other.
